Deena was born in Pakistan but grew up in London, where she attended the American School in St. Johns Wood. She then attended boarding school at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts, and graduated with honors from Brown University in 2016.
At Brown, Deena majored in Philosophy, specializing in Ancient Philosophy and contemporary virtue ethics. Her favourite Philosophy text is Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, which provided the basis for her senior thesis. She took advantage of Brown’s open curriculum through taking courses in English, Comparative Literature, History, and Religious Studies, developing a comfort with all modes of writing. Outside of classes, she worked on the campus student blog for 4 years as a writer and editor; she became Editor-in-Chief her senior year, and found mentoring younger students in finding their creative voices incredibly fulfilling. This experience has proved particularly useful in her work for ESM, as she understands how vulnerable students can feel during the writing process, as well as the eventual pride they can take in their work.
After graduating, Deena worked at a literary magazine in New York and as a literary agent’s assistant in London; both these opportunities allowed Deena to further develop her editorial skills, as she copyedited and proofread for professional writers.. She began working for ESM in September 2017, helping students with ACT and SAT Prep, college admission essays, AP English and general writing skills. She’s greatly enjoyed helping students develop their writing skills, seeing them proud of their progress, and getting them comfortable with pesky English grammar rules.
