Evangeline is a lover of all things learning. A life-long learner and educator, her passion for this field comes from growing up in one-too many countries (Kuwait, India, UAE, USA, Brazil, Mexico) and being surrounded by different ways of living life. Evangeline was born in Kuwait, but lives in Long Beach (which she now considers her hometown). She received her bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Advertising and Consumer Behavior from the University of Southern California and has been teaching languages for 10+ years. She’s tutored at USC, and at various elementary, middle, and high schools in the LAUSD district, all the while fine-tuning her own tutoring approach to align with how human beings learn. She teaches Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, ASL and English. Her Spanish-language students have gone from failing grades to A’s in their classes, receiving scores of 4 and 5 on their AP Spanish tests, and increasing their confidence in their own ability to master the language.
Regarding Evangeline’s teaching experience, being educated in various different educational systems across different cultures has allowed her to learn what sticks and what doesn’t. Evangeline’s approach to mentorship is to build a trusting relationship with her students, while nurturing their curiosity to explore new aspects of a language and to not be afraid of “making a mistake”. She believes in kindness and compassion for each of her students’ learning processes, and her specialty lies in learning how each student learns, and using those tools to make their lessons fun, engaging, interactive and free of the stress that comes with “getting things right”. She makes her classes personal, where what the students learn is relatable to their personal lives, so they have a personal connection and investment with the language topics. She’s found that holding space and giving her students all the time they need to fully integrate a concept are key to their development, so that they feel confident that they can, and indeed, do master and remember whatever it is they’re learning together.
When she’s not tutoring, Evangeline is either teaching Indian Classical Dance, Belly dance, Latin ballroom or performing at events. She’s also a huge fan of cooking cuisines that take hours and feeding them to her friends.
